Dear Parents and Guardians,

It’s that time again!  Many of you, including myself, attempted to squeeze in as much vacation as possible.  Family vacations help us realize how important our families are to us and it gives us an opportunity to build incredible lifelong bonds.  I spent some quality time with my grandkids as always.  Xavier is 7 years old and going into the 2nd grade.  Noah is 4 years old and is starting pre-school this year.  Both of my grandkids enjoyed swimming lessons during the summer.  This year I joined them for the first time.  I didn’t know how to swim so I signed up for an adult class.  My comfort zone was stretched to the extreme limit.  Fortunately I lost my fear of the water and I feel more confident in a swimming pool.  Well at least I can NOW keep my head above water, no pun intended!

It’s time to return to school and prepare for a new school year.  Once again I’m blessed to be back as your middle school principal.  This will be my final year with the district as I intend to officially retire after 29 years of service in the field of education.  My last four years at El Tejon have been challenging and very rewarding at the same time.  I’m grateful for your support and looking forward to this year!

Last year was exciting and filled with many special activities and projects; Camp Keep for 5th grade for the 3rd year in a row, Ocean Institute overnight for 6th grade, fieldtrips for 7th and 8th grades, sports program, carnivals, and banquets. Lockers were purchased for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades!  These projects and activities would not have been possible without the generous support and fundraising efforts of our students, staff, and especially our parents.  Thank you for making the previous school year a success!

Teachers and district staff have worked hard these last few days to prepare your classrooms.  In addition to our returning staff we have one new staff member, Mrs. Karen Castanon who will take over Mrs. Swarthout’s assignment.  We want to welcome Mrs. Castanon to the El Tejon family and would like to wish Mrs. Swarthout good luck in her new endeavors.

Please read and become familiar with our Parent-Student Handbook.  The goal in providing this handbook is to give parents and students an understanding of the rules, procedures, privileges, and responsibilities at El Tejon School.  Review the contents with your child and return all necessary forms to school as soon as possible.  The instructional school day begins promptly at 8:30 a.m.  It is essential that all students come to school every day on time, prepared, and ready to learn.  Students are dismissed at 2:55 p.m. and 1:50 p.m. on minimum days.  There is supervision after 8:10 a.m. if you are dropping off your student before school.

New this year, EARLY RELEASE WEDNESDAYS!  Every Wednesday beginning on August 23rd, we will be dismissing students at 1:50 p.m. to allow time for our teachers and administrators to participate in training and collaborate on educational matters. Also this year we will be offering Spanish language instruction to all students throughout the school year.  More information on this new program is forthcoming.

Parent participation is highly encouraged; feel free to stop in any time.   Our first Coffee and Donuts with the principal will take place on the first Friday of the month, September 1st, at 9:00 a.m. in Room 8.  I look forward to meeting you and welcoming back all students!
